Something we all struggle with is taking action when we don’t feel like it.
This is massively the case with taking action with our health, but it can be applied anywhere!
It’s happened to me. It’s happened to all of us.
You'll see shortly down this blog, in the past, I have not always been unstoppable.
There were dark days, and there will be more.
The good news is, without overcoming those dark days, I wouldn't be a quarter as resilient as I am now.
As determined as I am now.
As productive and focused.
BUT WE NEED HELP.
The problem... (well, part of many problems)
The way we’re set up nowadays is for short-term satisfaction EVERYWHERE. This only makes 'taking action' even harder (thanks).
So... Why work towards a long-term goal when you’re tired, if you can just scroll insta and eat pizza?
Why would we commit to something uncomfortable that would hugely improve our life if we can distract ourselves instantly and chose an easy route?
There is a way to break out of this rut.
A way to step up.
A way to take action irrespective of how you feel.
And before I tell you how… I want to share one sentence with you.
If this is the only sentence you take from this I’m happy (but hopefully you’ll take action too).
If we’re able to take action, we are who we want to be.
You see… The fear that stops us from taking action means there is a gap between who we are and who we want to be.
That gap means we’re not aligned with who we can be. Our higher self.
That gap saps energy, confidence and keeps us in a life of fearful thinking. Sometimes knowingly, sometimes unknowingly.
So alignment, well that sounds promising if it’s the opposite?
And you’ll be happy to know… Damn straight it’s the opposite!
Being in pure alignment with your highest potential skyrockets your energy. It peaks your confidence and keeps you in a state of unshakable courage.
And guess how we can move into alignment with our higher selves?
We take action when we don’t want to!
Uh-oh *gulps*
Don’t worry, this is a way to take action that REDUCES fear.
THIS is how we do it…
We are going to do a behaviour activation called Safe Exposure.
What is a behaviour activation?
Behaviour activation is when you do something beneficial that encourages a positive mood or outcome WHEN you don’t feel like doing it.
^^^ Re-read that. You want that to sink in deep.
Okay... then what is safe exposure?
Well... I first learned about this from a ‘pain management coach’ early in 2023.
In 2018 I got diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue. I navigated my way through it eventually and thought I had overcome it… wahoo!
Then in 2022 it came back
…And with a vengeance…
In 2022,,
I left a stable 7 year relationship because it wasn’t serving me. This cut deep.
I moved to live on my own for the first time in my life. Scary.
I fell ill many times whilst running two coaching businesses. This terrified me.
My clients didn’t know, but I had 21 trips to docs and hosp between May & Dec.
I had chronic fatigue, glandular fever and suspected fibromyalgia. I thought this was me for the rest of my life.
I was training clients in the morning and then going back to bed for the rest of the day.
I knocked my corporate wellbeing business on the head and was medically on leave for 3 months.
I was slogging through gym sessions that I couldn’t do.
My full body hurt most days a week for the whole year.
I had no energy
No belief
Fake confidence from being a coach.
I was floored.
Even after coaching over 1000 clients since 2015... that was all me.
It was the toughest, scariest, yet… most rewarding year of my life.
And I always said I wouldn’t launch my next coaching business (this) until I’m healthy enough to see it out.
I’m seeing it out (still).
I’m healthy, happy, confident, energised, no pain, focused, taking action. The most complete version of myself I’ve ever been and aim to help others get there too.
One of the steps that pulled me out of it was Safe Exposure.
So remember behaviour activation to get the juices flowing?
Safe exposure is the best form of behaviour activation.
And to sum it up as brief as possible here's why.
Discomfort > fear signals rush through the body and mind > body and mind feels danger > takes no action > chooses netflix instead of running
Opposite of fear? Opposite of danger?
You guessed it. Safety.
So how do you do it?
1. Set a timer for 10 minutes.
2. Start taking action towards what you’ve been putting off whilst relaying your message of safety when needed.
3. When the timer goes off, make a tally of it somewhere AND either restart the timer to go again for another 10 minutes or stop.
The tally is evidence for you that you can act when you don't want to. I aim for 400 a month but when I was busier it was 200.
It is SO, SO simple. But in the long-term, it only works from a place of support.
Think of it this way...
It's going from being your own worst critic to your own biggest fan
If you only do 10 minutes?
Decent start, you’ve finally made an attempt to do something you’ve previously been fearful of.
But guess what happens after 10…
The. Brain. Catches. Up.
The behaviour is activated.
You’ll likely feel better!
Like a rush of excitement!
A dopamine hit.
YOU, amigo, have just spent 10 minutes fully overcoming your fear and acting in more alignment to your higher self.
I bet… 98/100 times, you’ll go again for another 10 minutes.
WHY 10 minutes?
It’s small enough to not be scary
but big enough for the brain to catch up
Whilst teaching your brain 'YOU CAN'
AND getting a dopamine hit when your alarm goes off to tell you you did it.
Apply this NOT just when you need it and your life & health will take a mad positive trajectory.
And THAT, is how you can always take action when you don't feel like it.
